Power storage with maintenance-free
gel batteries. A gel battery is a ‘normal’ lead sulphuric acid battery available
in the so-called semi-traction (12 Volt) and traction versions (2 Volt cells).
The main difference between a gel battery and the traditional ‘wet’ battery
(whether open or sealed) is a gel substance which holds the electrolyte mix.
The gases that are produced during the charging process are converted to liquid
within the gel battery. This so called recombination process prevents any gases
from escaping and is what makes the gel battery so suitable for use as a service
battery.
